Puberty blockers have been prescribed for decades to alleviate the distress many trans young people experience, and to offer much-needed time to those questioning their gender. The Tories used emergency powers to ban new prescriptions of the medicine for trans people. They ignored warnings about the ban’s impact on vulnerable young trans people and allowed cisgender young people to carry on using it.
Shockingly, Labour then decided to keep the ban, extended it to November and even say it should be permanent. The health secretary has cited the controversial Cass review of gender identity services as reason for a ban, even though the review didn’t call for a ban and medical experts – including the British Medical Association – have strongly criticised how the review was put together.
We know that many MPs disagree with the health secretary’s position on puberty blockers, so we must make sure they speak out against a permanent ban. Use your power as a constituent to ask your MP to stand with young people and the trans community. Just enter your details to use our template.
