The Scottish Parliament must retract its transphobic toilet rules

The body that makes the rules for the Scottish Parliament has decided that trans people in Holyrood have to use the toilet that relates to their ”biological sex”. It’s humiliating, unworkable and legally wrong.

This decision sends a signal – a message that trans people are not welcome in the heart of Scotland’s democracy.

It’s unworkable. What’s the plan? Intimate inspections in the queue for the loo? And, as we’ve seen in Boston and Tucson, the practical effect of these partisan policies is men in positions of authority barging into women’s toilets – putting all women under suspicion and all women at risk.

And it’s legally wrong. The Supreme Court’s bungled judgment only applies to the Equality Act. And there’s nothing in the judgment that means toilets have to exclude trans people.

The Scottish Parliament must reverse this harmful and humiliating policy now. Join us in sending a letter to the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament to help everyone live with respect and safety – especially in the corridors of power and democracy.
